Results of Cat 2009 – 2010 a disaster for many students

The results for common Admission test announced yesterday has been a hiccup for many students since the declaration.

Many students reported the unexpected decrease in their cat scores. Well definitely tolerance limit would be maximum 10%, but many candidates are reporting that their scores has made them dumbstruck.

A status message of a candidate read – ” Last year percentile 98 – this year 21.5%ile. What would be running across mind of such students who sacrifices their whole year for only one thing – Admissions to IIM.

The results has caused a chaos over mass of students and left a question mark on Cat scoring process.

SO question is that, whether Cat people or Prometric will give any justification for same, or whether they will answer only after any RTI claim.

Lets take an true example – A person gets a call from IIM Shillong for 91%ile with an academic of almost 70% in 10th and 12th with 2 year of experience & a student doesn’t get a call from IIM Shillong after securing 97%ile with academics more than 85% overall and same experience.

Well till now only two shortlist has been announced and this much drama has been recognised, what will happen when all IIM’s will declare the shortlist names. Waiting for same.

Well now the critical question for Cat takers is that whether they will continue this Online process for next year as well or come back to paper- pencil test.

  7. CAt 2009 was a drama.nothing is logical. They gave large number of calls to keep everyone happy,so that all this drama is not seen.I have been cheated.CAt shoul;d be back to paper and pencil test.IIM have become just like any other govt department. They r worried about the Prometric contract and not the students nor the quality of intake.noone got scores as they though they have written exam.

  9. CAT 2009 scores introduces vague term, worries student

After much of a hustle and bustle, The CAT 2009 scores were released on Feb 28th 2010. But with the new computer based system the marking scheme also seemed to have changed. With 20 questions in each section of 3, expecting a usual marking scheme of 60 per section, students were surprised to see being marked for 150 per section.

Prior to examination, IIM authorities claimed that the difficulty levels across papers in all slot were consistently maintained but now have introduced a vague term in the scorecard
“ Psychometric equivalences to adjust for the difficulty levels “. Students are baffled to see such a marking scheme introduced without prior notification before the exam and till now no explanation has been given from the IIMs or the Prometric.

There has been a definite hue and cry among students and many seem to be pouring out in the forums of pagalguy and facebook.

A Cat aspirant from Chennai asks” What is psychometric analysis mean? How is the difficulty level decided? What is the veracity of the model? Difficulty or easiness is a relative term, how can absolute numbers be used to determine this”

One baffled student claims “ I have been a consistent scorer with verbal being my forte, I have a 98 percentile in GRE verbal and I have scored a 98.5 percentile in XAT 2010 VA. I was shocked to see my score at 34.34 percentile in CAT .” Another student claims, “I have scored 98.9 in Data interpretation in XAT 2010 and I have been a top scorer in this area, I have just ended up with 80 percentile in CAT “.
The scorecard has not detailed the marking scheme and no information has been given regarding number of questions attempted, the number correct and wrong. The IIMs and prometric have not reacted to this.

“ We want the authorities to make the system transparent, it is the right of the candidate to know the marking scheme before taking the exam. Why did not anyone brief us” an exasperated student writes.

Another student says,“ An overall tough paper on a particular day would mean a dip in the highest score attained while compared to an easy paper in which the highest score attained would be really high. So a simple normalization of a candidate’s score against the highest score on that particular day would have meant a fair percentile. More than 2 lakhs student have written the exam, a sufficient sample size and distribution on each day to worry about concentration of toppers on a particular day. What is psychometric scaling mean here? “

A CAT aspirant questions, “BITS Pilani also conducts its entrance examination as a computer based test over a period of 10 days. It gives the scores immediately after the candidate completes the exam and then the rank list is put off. And it has not run into any problems till this date and why so IIMs”

Many students seemed to be dejected on the way IIMs are keeping mum on this issue. Many feel that a glaring dip in one or two of the sectional scores have cost them so much and the IIMs have not reflected it while calling candidates for interview.

“ We want original pattern of scoring without any psychometric analysis. I really don’t know what this term means”, says an exasperated student.

Many students have decided to file RTI and have been mailing media houses and HR ministry, the site claims but on the whole they feel that it would be too late by the time IIMs answer.

Many want IIMs to stall the process of admission, address the grievances of students and devise a better method to use these CAT scores this year taking into account their past accomplishments and rate them based on additional rounds during Personal interview rather than blindly rejecting a candidate based on these scores.

  21. I, as a faculty just feel helpless and sad when i see how students are being given a raw deal at each and every front.
First of all, its the coaching classes.Everybody knows that its marketing glitz(by presenting unrealistic dreams) that draws students to aspire for IIMs and other top B-schools… perfectly knowing that more than 90% of the students don’t really fit the bracket. But it’s all a numbers game.. and numbers mean revenue…. and to get the required revenue, do every trick that market warrants…  and to hell with what would happen to those students who were made to see the dream.. but failed miserably…Let them cry and realize that they were not made for it  and call themselves fools….. But after having paid a hefty fee.

Well, in a country like India, if one expects transparency in every aspect of public life….you know what to call him: an ar.. hole. Yet CAT till last year was widely acknowledged as one of the most fair of all exams…and certainly very prestigious. Well, this year, except those students who have benefited by late participation or any other dubious means, everybody, from the start feels something is fishy…nobody knew the marking criteria(isn’t it important?), plus a multitude of glitches(same questions being repeated, nonsense non-disclosure policy, etc.,)
But the biggest bombshell of all…. the psychometric assessment of difficulty level and accordingly, the marks allotment. Who’s fooling whom? Even Psychometric experts agree that it isn’t a perfect science, it is only to be used as an aid, and not for absolute decision making. Now, is it the fault of the students that they got the so-called easy questions, and even if they got the easy ones, wouldn’t they have performed equally well in the so-called tough ones…?There are many more questions such as these…but one can’t go on and on…
So to cut it short, it is any body’s guess that something is drastically wrong with this year’s CAT. And who stands to lose?Certainly not, the snobs who call the shots…..

The result of 38.2 percentile has killed all my ambitions and I could see the loss and let down feeling in my father’s eyes. I was sure that I would end up with at least 70 to 75 percentile, come what may if not 90 or so. This is a big blow for me . I m sure I did rather well and expected much beyond by XAT score of 54.85 and I m definite XAT was much more tougher than the CAT PAPER I got. Now I have lost all my interest in MBA and m feeling terribly let down. However, I wish all my fellow CAT ASPIRANTS who got marks to their expectation all the very best .

This year CAT is a great disaster , right from the day1 itself there are lot of clinches and in the end in result also the same repeated. officially result was announced at 1 pm and the server was not that much strong to carry the result that it failed to respond ………may be atleast 1 lakh students may have engaged at same time , server was busy…..then was up by 6.40pm, and was well though the result it showed was not well .A a student who gets 90-99%le in his/her mocks and who has secured very good percentile in other exams got only in the range of 50-60. think about it……… many students who were expecting good scores and who has not attended the admission process of other colleges waiting for the CAT score have ended up in deception.CAT is a big dream and life for many aspirants, no one should play with the life of others.

I this way, CAT left out those students who are average score in 10th & 12th exams. just 10 & 12 marks IIM can’t be judge students quality ,ability. what will happen students of Bihar, UP,MP,Chattisgrah, Gharkand ….the avg result of 10th & 12th state Board is just 29% & 36%. If any students in this category made a good percentile in CAT exam so they are left out in selection process . Have they no right to do study in IIMs .It is totally injustice with Avg students. I thick friends, we should take a strong action against them & fill a RTI & PIL .we must restrict weighted of 10th & 12th marks in Selection process of IIMs and file a petition to president against it .our afford brings hope those students like you ,like me. 32. CAT 2009 and subsequent selection process have left many aghast. First, there were problems in taking examinations affecting many candidates psychologically. Then some candidates who could have taken difficult slots suffered as their slots were easier and their marks reduced for no fault of theirs by applying Statistical tools. Thirdly, IIMs disowned CAT, reduced its weightage and started juggling with various criteria. Fourthly, while applying these criteria across State Boards further and unknown Statistical tools were applied. It is anybody’s guess as to who would have been selected and who not. IIMs are behaving as if they are all knowledgeable and answerable to none.

IIMs are behaving as if they are all knowledgeable, supreme in their intelligence and answerable to none.

  34. We are very happy with CAT 2009 result. Both of us secured good percentiles as predicted.Online CAT 2009 has made history this year by letting 250000 students(approx) sit for the exam.Although CAT exams in different slots faced several issues but we are happy with IIM CAT results.CAT has followed GRE and GMAT adaptive psychometric equivalence which is in accordance to the international standard. Many students do not understand such mathematical scaling issues thats why they are making hue and cry.Prometric is a global worldwide leader in online exams and we strongly hope that next year online CAT should be continued(maybe with more vigilance in exams).

  37. Mayank, It is very easy to file an RTI against any government institute, costs you only 10 Rs. Every govt associated institute has a CPIO (Chief pulic information officer) who is obligated to process our quries relating to RTI, all we need to do is just send an application to him.
So here’s the process for your case-
    1. Go to IIM’s site, look for RTI officer contact details. OR Go to http://righttoinformation.gov.in/ and in the right panel click on Union Govt. A page will open with 3 drop downs select Minstry of HRD then Dept. of higher education then IIM Ahemdabad (As this time CAT was organized by IIM A)
This will give u a link to the CPIO details. In this case its: http://www.iimahd.ernet.in/institute/officer_rti.htm

    2. Go to nearest post office and tell them you need to file an RTI and need to get the payorder for the same, they’ll charge you Rs 10 and give you a slip.

    3. Write an application stating whatever information you require. You do not need to mention the reason why you require it. But state your name and address clearly along with your phone number (optional). You will receive reply on the same address you specify here. The application format is not specified by RTI dept, it only says that it needs to be formal and clear in wording.

    4. Pack this application and the payorder together and send it to the address you got in step one by any courier/speedpost/registry or deliver it yourself if you like.

Within 15-20 days you will get a reply in normal circumstances, delayed case 30 days and exceptional cases (rare ones) 45 days. If the reply delay exceeds 45 days, its a direct violation of RTI act. So hammer them if it happens through CIC(google it).

In case you are unable to find CPIO details for some govt organization, just send in your application directed to CPIO, (address of org).

Hope this helps you and alot more people who have been looking to file RTI but dont know where to start.
